Empowering Youth through the Young Samaritan Programme

Empowering Youth through the Young Samaritan Programme

A successful Young Samaritan decentralized workshop was held from November 8th to 9th 2023 at Navakholo in Kakamega County.

Young Samaritan is an empowering life skills program targeting young people to prepare them for puberty and adult life. The goal of the programme is to help the youth to integrate responsible decision-making for themselves and community development.

The Young Samaritan programme is based on the story of the good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37 which gives a picture of the journey of our lives and how to navigate the different seasons.

The workshop brought together 60 youths who had an opportunity to learn from BSK facilitators and engage with each other through the sessions that included friendship and peer pressure, sexuality and puberty changes, health and environment, children’s rights, HIV prevention and stigmatization, making good decisions and being a good Samaritan.

As for Kenya, adolescents need information and knowledge on how to build self-esteem, handle peer pressure, develop identity, handle school challenges, self-expression, and sexuality among others. The young ones appreciated the workshop, adding that they had learned how to map their life journey, build confidence, interact with peers, and make positive life choices.

We hope that the youth shall share the information learnt with their friends and peers in school, Church, and family so that they can have a strong foundation in life, grounded in God’s word.
