Learn more about the Lubukusu Bible

Lubukusu is mainly spoken in the Bungoma district of Western Kenya. Babukusu Christians have not had access to a good translation of the Scriptures for a long time. The Lulogooli and Luluya Bibles were widely used in Friends and Anglican churches, respectively. It was this need for their Scriptures that led to the request for their own translation of the Scriptures.

Dr. Kees De Blois, who was both a UBS translation consultant and a missionary for the Reformed Church of East Africa, played a very active role in helping the churches in the Bukusu area get started. Keys knew the language very well, earning his Ph.D. according to its phonology.

Lubukusu translation was started in 1976 by a team of native translators including Jonathan Baras, William Velime and John Macete. The New Testament in Lubukusu was published by the Bible Society of Kenya in 1992 and presented by the Reformed Church of East Africa in March 1993. The Lubukusu Bible is interdenominational. The release of the complete Bible in 2010 was well received by the community and has been a great tool for preaching and evangelism.
